Family owned businesses are the pillar of any modern economy. Some of the more dynamic, creative and fast growing businesses in the western world and in Israel, as well as the longest-standing and the most stable, are family owned businesses – both public and private. Nevertheless, only recently studies have been initiated for developing fundamental and systematic methodologies for measuring and quantifying their contribution, identifying the processes that characterize them and utilizing their full unique potential and increasing their chances of survival.

Family businesses have common characteristics – they are flexible and fast at decision making, have a view for the long term, are proud of the family legacy and are committed to the success of the business. At the same time, they share certain problematic attributes – they may become rigid and introvert, resist changes and be prone to emotional influences. All these hinder their adaptability and, often, their attraction to younger family members, reducing their chances of survival in the long run.
